| COLONELS OF THE REGIEMENT | | | Lieutenant General Ashok Kapur, PVSM, VSM | | Lieutenant General Ashok Kapur was born on 13 May 1947 at Lahore (now in Pakistan). His early education was at Kanpur and Mangalore before he completed his 10th grade at Delhi. He was selected for the National Defence Academy, Kharakvasla in 1963. After his training at the Indian Military Academy, Dehradun he was commissioned into 7 SIKH LI on 11 June 1967. His first assignment was in Nagaland. He saw action in the 1971 war with Pakistan in the Uri sector of Jammu and Kashmir. Thereafter, he was posted as an instructor at the National Defence Academy, Kharakvasla, from 1972-74. He also served in the Sikh Light Infantry Regimental Centre, Fatehgarh, as a training company commander during 1977. On completing the course at the Defence Services Staff College, Wellington, in 1978, he was Brigade Major in 82 Mountain Brigade in Arunachal Pradesh.
Rejoining 7 SIKH LI in Bikaner, he moved with the battalion to the Jaurian sector of Jammu & Kashmir. He also served as GSO2 (SD & WE) in the newly raised 33 Mechanized Division at Hissar in 1983-84. He assumed command of 7 SIKH LI in January 1986. After successfully completing his command of the battalion he was posted as Military Assistant to Lieutenant General AK Chatterjee, who was
| then commanding Southern Command and was also the Overall Force Commander of the Indian Peace Keeping Force in Sri Lanka. During his stint as Military Assistant he visited Sri Lanka and the Maldives during the operations. He attended the Long Defence Management Course at Secunderabad in 1991 before being posted on the Directing Staff of the Senior Command Wing of the College of Combat, Mhow. He then moved as Colonel General Staff of 28 Infantry Division in the Kashmir Valley, where he was awarded the Chief of Army Staff's Commendation Card.
| On promotion as Brigadier, he commanded 322 Infantry Brigade in Rajasthan before moving once again to the Kashmir Valley as Brigadier General Staff at Headquarters 15 Corps. He was awarded the Vishisht Seva Medal, in January 1999, for his distinguished service and nominated to attend the course at the National Defence College, Delhi. On completion of the course he was posted to Army Headquarters as Military Assistant to the Chief of Army Staff, General VP Malik. On promotion as Major General he commanded 15 Infantry Division, during Operation Parakram. He served as Deputy Commandant of the Indian Military Academy, Dehradun, till his promotion to Lieutenant General. He commanded 16 Corps, the largest corps, in Jammu and Kashmir till December 2004.
| During his tenure as Corps Commander, fencing all along the Line of Control in the Jammu sector (from Akhnur to the Pir Panjal mountain range) was completed in record time. This had a major impact on the conduct of counter-infiltration tasks by the troops. For the distinguished service rendered by him as Corps Commander, he was conferred the Param Vishisht Seva Medal in January 2005. He is now serving as Chief of Staff at Headquarters Southern Command. He is widely traveled in India and abroad and takes an active interest in seminars and discussions pertaining to security, team building and leadership.
