Following Hukm's appeal for a good turnout, I think he would have approved of the result: twenty-seven was a very good response and a tribute to him.

Prior to the meal being served our Chairman called for two minutes silence to be observed in memory of Hukm. He was sorely missed.

Luckily this year, after a couple of prods to the management, a meal of reasonably good standard was provided. Even so, we may find an alternative venue not too far from there for next year. Captain Bromley is very kindly undertaking this task.

One of our members, Lt. Peter Seaber found the luncheon an expensive day out. He had forgotten, too Iate, to bring a change of clothing, and had to stop en route to purchase a new jacket, tie, etc. Nil desperandum!

We were delighted to welcome Dr. Daniel Marston, the author of "Phoenix from the ashes: the Indian Army in the Burma Campaign". This major work examines in detail twelve units, six from pre-war regular army and six wartime 'expansion' units, who together finally turned defeat into victory. Our 1st Battalion was one of the 'expansion' units included with a major contribution from Lt. Col. John Maling. Our Association has a copy which is being passed round, but if you wish to purchase a copy of your own please contact: Hector Routley as soon as possible.

 (2) Messages from those who could not attend

Hector has kindly collated the replies, from those members who for one reason or another were unable to be present, but wished to be remembered to old friends and colleagues:

Lt Col J. D. Maling DSO MC [1 Sikh Ll] No recent letter but the last message was received on 14th August from his wife Frida reporting that, following bad leg ulcers, John had to have a leg amputated. His three daughters were helping to look after him. A letter was sent hoping for his successful rehabilitation.

Mrs. Connie Callin [widow of Capt P Callin, R. C.] has again sent a very generous contribution to help pay for drinks at the Reunion, and to remember Pat. This continuing interest, in the Regimental Association is very much appreciated and gives us an extra spur for keeping going.

Lt Col E. W. Carvalho [1 Sikh Ll] who telephoned to express his sadness at our loss, of Hukm. He was 78 on the day of the funeral, but he asked his younger son Michael, resident in the UK, to attend as his representative. Michael with his wife did attend. It was very heartwarming and a pleasure to meet them.

Capt D. R. Casselle [25 Bn. Sikh Ll] Just a card to let us know he is still with us. Come on, Derek we're not all that far away!

Capt J. K. Crookshank [grandson 34 RSP] Unfortunately has a lymphoma and is receiving chemotherapy. Sent his best wishes and hopes that we will be able to continue for at least ten more years before winding down. We send best wishes for his full recovery.

Mrs. Wyn Davies [widow 34 RSP] Regretted that due to advancing years [91] she is not mobile enough to attend and sends her best wishes.

Capt. E. Heath [Regtl Centre] Regrets he cannot attend but reports that his "tribe" is expanding, now having 4 grandsons, 3 great grandsons and 1 great daughter.

Lt. J. Jenkins [1 Sikh Ll] Cannot attend but sends best wishes.

Col A. F. Mackain-Bremner OBE [Nephew 34 RSP] Had hoped to attend Hukm's Funeral but couldn't. Also could not attend the Reunion lunch because he left for Kenya on that day where he was representing RCEL and paying grants to ex. Askari from the Askari Appeal that he has been running.

Mr. H. Mackay [son 34 RSP] who had an unavoidable business engagement sent his best wishes. He has very kindly agreed to be our contact with India when we reorganise our Association.

Capt. T. Shiner [2 Sikh Ll] Apologies for not attending due to difficulties in travelling but he did make a supreme effort to attend Hukm's funeral. Earlier too he had made a generous donation to bolster our funds, which is greatly appreciated.

Mr. M. Turnbull [Grandson 32 SP] wrote enclosing a photo of a mounted Sikh Pioneer with a walking Sikh Ll sepoy which he had found in his late aunt's possessions. It will join our collection.

Capt D. Mills [Hon. Treas. Indian Army Assn] [16 Punjab] wrote acknowledging receipt of the annual sub. 16 Punjab still meet informally for lunch, which is well supported even though they are all in their 80s.
