Major Birendra Singh was deployed in Sri Lanka as part of the Indian Peace Keeping Force. He led a force of 30 men in the heart of Jaffna Town at KOKKUVIL to destroy the militant headquarters. Due to poor flying conditions and a navigational error, the helicopter dropped the Force west of the designated landing zone, at a point which was strongly defended by militants who brought in heavy and accurate fire on this Force. Major Birendra Singh with utter disregard to his personal safety inspired his men to keep on fighting till the last man and last round. The entire force of 30 men with their leader laid down their lives after a tenacious fight lasting 18 hours. Thus Major Birendra Singh displayed conspicuous courage and valiant leadership in very adverse circumstances and made the supreme sacrifice in the highest tradition of the Army.

On 12 October 1987 at about 0200 hours, Sepoy Kuldip Singh along with his rifle platoon was heli-landed deep into the militants' stronghold in KOKKUVIL area in Sri Lanka. Immediately on landing, his platoon was heavily surrounded and came under very effective and extremely intensive automatic fire. Sepoy Kuldip Singh fought heroically defending his platoon position and engaging militants by fire. But after a heroic fight all the members of this platoon were killed except three. By 0800 hours they had exhausted all ammunition, but undeterred and with high morale he fixed his bayonet, took the other surviving Sepoy Sukhwant Singh with him in a bayonet charge. Sepoy Gora Singh who was severely wounded was asked to give covering fire. Knowing fully well that a bayonet charge would mean certain "DEATH" he preferred to charge the militants and get killed gallantly rather than passively remaining in his position. Sepoy Kuldip Singh thus displayed conspicuous courage and valour in the face of the militants.
